Investigations on the Dynamic Response of Adjacent Buildings Connected by Viscous Dampers

This paper investigates the seismic performance of two adjacent buildings connected by viscous dampers. Three types damper placement are discussed, including installing dampers within a single building, connecting at same floor level, and inter-story level. Analytical models established to consider various dynamic properties buildings, theoretical solutions obtained, transmissibility curves, additional modal damping, input energy under design spectrum. Time history analyses an engineering project performed with different placements. Different numerical compared for frequently rarely occurred earthquakes. The mitigation effect is discussed regard story drift reduction rate energy. Theoretical results demonstrate that provide added damping while causing coupled response. As result, it less efficient than traditional ways building. Furthermore, significantly increase reaction floors without installed When designing connect careful calculations should be made.
